Hello Second Grade Families,

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! Many thanks for being such a great class. It is a pleasure working with you each and every day.

Teddy Bear Day is just around the corner. Try and bring in a new teddy bear any time between now and December 5th. All will be donated to families participating in the Adopt-a-Family program.

Immediately upon our return from the Thanksgiving holiday, the St. Vincent de Paul food drive will begin. Grocery bags will be given out soon & we ask that you fill them with non-perishable foods for hungry families here in Ventura County.

This week in class…

Math: Unit 4 — The class continues to work on addition and subtraction strategies. This week we will focus on part-and-total diagrams as well as change-to-more number stories.

No math homework this week. Instead, just relax and count up all the family and friends we are thankful for in our lives.

Reading: There will be no fluency or reading log homework this week as well. Instead, cozy up with a good book at your leisure.

Word Work: Our spelling test is scheduled for Tuesday the 20th. For many, last week’s words were especially challenging so we gave everyone a little extra time.

Writing: The students have worked and worked over the course of this trimester learning and trying out craft moves and writing techniques. This week we will assemble our writing portfolios before celebrating our accomplishments. Wednesday morning we will have a small author’s tea where students will have the time to share their best work, discuss how stories changed across drafts and praise each other’s growth across the trimester.

Science: Upon our return, we will embark on a short unit on forces in motion. It will be preparation for writing as science and writer’s workshop will soon merge in a Lab Reports and Science Writing Books unit.

Social Studies: All about Thanksgiving!

Religion: The class will spend some time writing and sharing prayers of thanks.

Have a great holiday!

Ms. Espinosa
