Academics:

Religion – we have been learning the importance of quiet and listening during prayer to get to know God better. This week we learn to encounter God through prayer. Two new Saints we will discuss, St. Therese Little Flower of Jesus and St. Anthony of Padua. Remember to be thinking of a Saint your child can portray. More information coming later.

Parents or family members are welcome to join us for Mass on Friday mornings at 8:30. Meet us at the church we sit on the right side, first 9 pews. If I know your are coming we can save a spot!

Language arts – A new Words the Way sort this week Fruits and Vegetables – look for a copy in your child’s home practice folder. Focus is on sorting and categorizing as well as beginning letters, sounds and ABC order.

  • Phonics workshop finds us breaking down words listening for syllables and beginning and ending sounds. Rhyming songs and alphabet song in different tunes.
  • Writing workshop will begin with narrative writing and drawings.
  • Reading workshop begins in whole group. We are listening to reading and discussing the story or informational text. I’d like to start reading with a partner this week.

Math – we are working on geometric shapes, patterning by shape, size, and color. Counting by 1s to 100 and 10s to 100. Our math groups each week consist of building with cups and sticks, manipulative counters for simple math facts to 10 and worksheets. And a game to begin learning counting by fives!

Science – season of fall, the changes to animals and plants. Our peas are growing in our backyard garden planters! At this point we have two plantings of peas to watch and care for. My plan is to plant carrots in one of our garden beds this week. We need soil! Parents can earn service hours for bringing in a large bag of garden soil 1.5 or 2 cubic feet please.

Social studies – last Friday we welcomed 5th graders to our class. They are studying the southwestern states and came in to work with us! We learned a bit about Arizona’s state facts: The Saguaro’s cactus is the flower and the Palo Verde tree. We will continue learning more about Arizona’s state bird and insect facts this week.
