Week of February 24th

Dear Second Grade Families,

Last week, our students worked with their buddies drawing the state their flat person visited the last few months.  They did a great job working together.  You will see their state displayed at the School Fair on Wednesday.  I look forward to seeing all of you.  Remember, Flat Projects are due tomorrow.

HERE’S A LOOK AT OUR WEEK…

HOMEWORK:  No reading log or IXL.  Children will need to do the following Common Core Worksheet and Fluency this week.  Homework is due Monday.  Don’t forget to study for the spelling test.

RELIGION: We will do our Virtus lessons this week (Safety on the internet)

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Reading: We are wrapping up the story, ANTS (non-fiction).  We will focus on main idea and details.  We will also be making an ant flip book.   We will be reviewing ending words in –nd, -nt, and –mp.

We will finish the Box Car Children! Our emphasis this week will be summarizing the story.  We will do this as a whole class. Then, the students will write their own summary next week.  We will begin “The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo” by Judy Blume.  You may go to your local library to check out this book so your child may follow along.   We will begin the story next week.

Spelling: We will work on Unit 21: all, aw and o (dog). Spelling Test will be on Friday since it’s a full day.

Writing:  We have published our last work.  We will begin discussing persuasive writing.

MATH:  We are working really hard on multidigit addition and ballpark estimation.  We hope to finish our week with a math test. Our test will consist of the following:

*show me 67 degrees

*round to the nearest “10” 79 would be 80   45 will be 50

* ballpark estimation (35+18; answer 40+20=60)

*is the number even/odd

Go onto everyday math unit 4 if you feel your child needs extra support before Friday.

Social Studies:  We will focus on a timeline of past presidents.

Science:  We will review chapter 6 on Forces

Important Dates:

March 19 will be our First Reconciliation: please refer to last week’s newsletter for information.

March 21 will be our Primary Center Day!  If you are available to  volunteer on Friday, please send me an email. 🙂

Please feel free to contact me via email if you have any questions or concerns.
