A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

READING:  We are learning how a book wants to be read by taking a sneak peek, reading a lot, reading in longer phrases by scooping up snap (sight) words, and paying attention to what is happening in the story.

PHONICS: We are reviewing phonological awareness by listening to all the sounds (beginning, middle, and end) in the words. We are listening for blends and digraphs so we can spell and read those words. We are also learning how to make new words using snap words such as went, will, and look.

SPELLING: We continue to learn the routines and procedures for Word Work. Each child has their own sort, and your child is reviewing the different spelling patterns for those sorts. When we start our Word Sort groups in a couple of weeks, a copy of your child’s sort will be sent home so you can practice with them. We will have a practice spelling test next Monday, September 27, so your child is familiar with the spelling test routine.

MATH: In Unit 1, we are learning about numbers and routines. This week’s focus is equivalent names for numbers, counting patterns, and comparing numbers using the relation symbols <, >, and =. We will be taking the Unit 1 test next week.

RELIGION: In Unit 1, we are learning that God gives us life and love. We have already completed Chapters 1 and 2 and begin Chapter 3. We will be learning that through Baptism we become members of the church and share in God’s life.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP: We are working on personal narratives – true stories that happened to us. We have been revving up our writing muscles as we think about small moments and plan out what we want to write. This week we are looking at mentor texts to help us with our writing as we revise and edit.

SCIENCE: Last week, we started a lesson on differentiating between different animals by focusing on their different features. We will continue and complete that lesson this week.
