A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS

READING:  We are learning how to use what we know to figure out tricky words. We are also learning to use more than one strategy to figure out what makes sense when reading by checking the first letters of the words.

PHONICS: We are reviewing phonological awareness by listening to all the sounds (beginning, middle, and end) in the words. We are focusing on the digraph (qu) and the rime –ash.

SPELLING: We continue to learn the routines and procedures for Word Work. Each child has their own sort, and your child is reviewing the different spelling patterns for those sorts. A copy of your child’s sort is in their Homework Folder.

MATH: In Unit 1, we are learning about numbers and routines. This week we are learning about temperature, place value (1s, 10s and 100s) using base-10 blocks, and addition facts using dominoes. We will be taking the Unit 1 Test on Friday.

RELIGION: After learning that through Baptism we become members of the Church, we are now learning that Baptism is the beginning of a new way of life service to others.

WRITER’S WORKSHOP: We are working on personal narratives – true stories that happened to us. Our focus this week is collecting ideas for small moment stories and learning how to stretch out those small moments.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We are learning the importance of individual action and character and how heroes from long ago and recently have made a difference in others’ lives. This week we are learning about Abraham Lincoln.
