We subscribe to Scope Magazine to give the students more exposure to nonfiction reading. The students are not allowed to take them home; however, they can access the magazine online.

Independent reading– students need to read 30 minutes a night 5 nights a week or 150 minutes a week and log their minutes on biblionasium.com Each month a reading challenge is posted in the ELA room and students earn 20pts in literature for completion of the requirements.

6th grade– Book club books are provided by the school.  The Cay by Theodore Taylor should be purchased for the 2nd trimester- available on the kindle.

7th gradeThe Giver by Lois Lowery should be purchased by September 4th- available on the kindle-for 1st trimester book club.  Dragonwings by Laurence Yep should be purchased for the 2nd trimester not available on the kindle.

8th grade- Students will have a choice between 2 historical novels, The Sign of the Beaver (less challenging) or The Witch of Blackbird Pond (more challenging) both by Elizabeth George Speare- should be purchased by September 5th-both books are available on the kindle-for first trimester book club. The school will provide each 8th grader with a copy of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton to read in the 2nd trimester.

Language Arts IXL- students are assigned 10-15 items to complete each month.  The items are starred, and the students are expected to get 80% correct.  The students will earn 20pts in English for completion.

Writers Workshop– All final drafts need to be typed in MLA format. **If you do not have a computer at home, have your child make an appointment with me to type at school.
