Dear Second Grade Families,

Reconciliation went well. Thank you for helping to make this a prayerful occasion for your child. Having four priests available made it quick. Thank you to our room moms for the delicious reception that followed. Those who took advantage of spending the rest of the day with your child hopefully had a special day. Sacrament of Reconciliation certificates will be in the blue Tuesday folder. We will not be going to reconciliation again as a class so if your child would like to go again before First Communion (or you think it is needed) check the schedule on the church bulletin and make it a family affair.
With First Communion quickly approaching (May 7), please adhere to the clothing guidelines and keep it simple. (If you need another copy please let me know). Remember it is not about the clothing but about a sacrament. I can still remember how itchy my dress was. I remember during another ceremony a girl’s dress had a large ruffle at the bottom and it got caught in the kneeler. I heard ‘rip’ followed by tears.  Another time another girl had a longer than recommended dress and couldn’t walk in the dress without holding it way up. She also had problems getting in and out of the pew. There are many stories of clothing mishaps. So I thank you for keeping it simple and refined.
Sponsors are not required for First Holy Communion. It has never been a tradition here at Sacred Heart. Since it is a cultural custom, if you want your child to have one, you can choose one, but he/she will sit with you and not be participating with your child, as he/she will be sitting with the class as a whole group.

Book It and the March calendar are due Thursday, March 31. March is the last month for Book-It. There will be something new for reading beginning the first week of April. Stay tuned. A new monthly calendar of activities (for April) will go home Friday, April 1.  I enjoy reading the written results as well as the response journals.  These activities help with time management as well as groundwork for future long-range assignments in the upcoming grades.

This Thursday we will have a presentation from a Readers Theater group. They will read and act out three favorite children’s stories. Ask your child about this.

Next Tuesday, April 5, we will go on a field trip to the Oxnard Performing Arts Center to watch a performance of “The Wizard of Oz”. This is a great classic story. Permission slips with the fee listed will be in the Tuesday folder. Please return these quickly.

April is poetry month and the annual speech contest. Look for upcoming information!
