Dear Parents,                          May 13, 2012

Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you all enjoyed your Mother’s Day gift and card!

We are continuing on with Theme 10.  Our reading strategy this week is summarizing. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is sequence of events. The ability to organize our thoughts through what happens and when in our story helps us summarize the main ideas of the story we are reading. Our phonics focus this week continues to be on r-controlled words but with a focus on ar, as in star and hard. Our grammar focus is on describing words- taste, smell, and feel. Even though we do not have a new spelling unit don’t forget to practice past spelling words using Spellingcity.com!

We will continue our chapter on geometry in math by jumping into fractions this week! We will begin with 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4. In social studies we will be working on our writing prompt on what makes our world (near and far) special. We will be taking a break from Science as we recently concluded our study of matter.

In religion we will turn our focus to Our Blessed Mother- Mary. In addition, Sacred Heart will have a May Crowning on Wednesday at 2pm. First grade will be responsible for the crowning. Please join us if your schedule permits!

Announcements for the week:

  • Please remind your student to bring their library book on Tuesday so that they may check out another one.
  • Water bottle sales continue on Tuesday and Thursday for $1.
