Dear Third Grade Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the extra day this weekend. This morning, we hit the ground running! As a reminder, please make every effort to arrive at school on time or early. Our day starts promptly at 7:50 and late arrivals often have difficulty catching up while the class has already moved on.

This week we’ll be studying the following:

Math: Unit 2 Lessons 2.5-2.6. We will be focusing on word problems or “Number Stories.” Later in the week, we will be reviewing the second grade skills of subtracting with regrouping as well as subtracting across zeroes. Feel free to follow along with us at www.everydaymathonline.com. Your child’s username and password can be found in his/her planner.

For IXL math homework, please complete the following Third Grade skills:

C.8 Addition Patters Over Increasing Place Values

D.6 Subtraction Patterns Over Increasing Place Values

O.2 Elapsed Time I

Spelling: Click here for this week’s spelling words along with the spelling pattern/principle.

Vocabulary: There will be a Unit 8 quiz on Friday!

Reading: We will finish Grandfather’s Journey this week with a closer look at setting and plot. As previously noted, the class will begin Sarah Plain and Tall next. Although most children have their copies of the book here, those that do not should pick one up as soon as possible as we will begin reading it Monday the 14th.

English: We will wrap up Unit 1 with Lesson 8: “Run-on Sentences.” We will have our very first Unit test next week. Students are welcome to take their grammar books home to study should they choose.

Science: In class, we will continue with Chapter 7 taking a closer look at the difference between compounds and mixtures.

Social Studies: We will finish “Our People” with a short writing exercise.

Religion: Our attention will now turn to Chapter 25 “The Eucharist is a Gift” as we change our focus from the Liturgy of the Word to the Liturgy of the Eucharist. There is no study guide for this Chapter. However, students are always welcome to take home their books should they so choose.

Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
