Third grade families,

I hope you all are having a wonderful week! Thank you to the families that have conferenced with me so far. I have quite a few families left, so please keep a look out for an email from me to schedule a day and time that works for all!

A few important dates:

Wednesday, 10/3 is a free dress day! Please bring in $1 to help support the Jamaica Medical Mission.

Thursday, 10/4 there will be NO P.E.  Students will be having music this day. P.E. clothes do not need to be worn on this day.

Last week, our class reached a goal of filling up our vase with pom-poms! Once the class fills it up, they are allowed to choose the class reward (with my approval, of course :-).  The class chose to watch a movie along with bringing an item to have with them.

On Thursday, 10/4 we will be watching a science related movie of The Magic School Bus, re-capping our last science chapter. Students may bring ONE small item with them… a small stuffed animal OR small blanket to keep them company during the movie!

Friday, 10/5 NO SCHOOL (teacher in service day)

Homework for this week:

  • Fluency passage
  • 100 minutes/week and logged
  • Math IXL: D. 2, C.2, S.5

Sneak peek to our academic week:

Math: In math this week, we begin Unit 2. We will start off our week with reviewing fact & number families using fact triangles.  These are basic math facts that students should begin memorizing by third grade, for example: 3+6=9, 2+4=6, 9+3=12, etc.  Then, we will begin extending our fact families: 3+6=9, 30+60=90, 300+600=900, etc.  We will also continue to review “What’s my Rule?” problems, where students are able to look at a number pattern, figure out what the “rule” is, and apply that rule in the numbers to follow.

Reading: This week in reading we will work on re-telling important events of our books, and dig deeper by adding our own thinking as we read, “This makes me think…”, “This makes me wonder…”  As your child reads at home, please ask them to re-tell their stories, and watch out to make sure that they are re-telling the main events of the story, skipping over the small details.

Writing: We continue with our narrative stories, continuing to re-vise and edit our writing, chunking our writing into paragraphs, and expanding our tiny paragraphs into larger ones. By this week we hope to have our final drafts written, and next week begin our third bend of writing!

Word Work: We continue on with our differentiated spelling groups.  Due to the short week, we will not be having a spelling test this week. Spelling tests will be next Monday, 10/8. Spelling words can be found in your child’s planner, as well as on spellingcity.com.

Grammar: In grammar this week we will work on capitalizing book titles and underlining book titles when writing.

Religion: This week in religion, we continue on with SLEs and the sacraments, reflecting on why God gifts us with these sacraments, and finding psalms that fit in right with them. We will begin categorizing our sacraments later this week.

Science: As we wrapped up our chapter 1 last week, and because our class earned a class reward, we will be watching a fun and educational episode of The Magic School Bus!

Have a great rest of the week,

Miss Poindexter
