Hello Third Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and all were able to take a moment to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

Math: We will wrap up Chapter 5: Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals by combining our knowledge of decimals with that of the metric system. The class will focus on fractions of a meter as applied to a rain gauge (timely, I know!). We will complete the chapter with a test on Friday.

IXL Math Skills Homework:

AA4: Compare Decimals

AA5: Order Decimals

Reading: This week leads us into the second bend in our character studies unit. We will focus on character arcs, learning that “stories are shaped like a mountain: readers watch characters go up and down.”

Word Work: This week’s words can be found in your child’s planner. Our spelling test is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Grammar: We continue our trek through Unit 3 with a look at Unit 19: future-tense verbs. As always, I would highly recommend taking advantage of the Grammar Workshop online resources. Below is a link for a Lesson 19 Quiz. Try it out and see how you do. Click here for practice quiz.

Writer’s Workshop: We’ve now organized and written a draft of the first chapter of our informational texts! This week we will be studying mentor texts in search of elaboration strategies before writing on our second sub-topic.

Science: Keep your eye on your e-mail inbox. Directions for our School Fair projects will be sent home this week. Note: It’s not until February 22nd.

Social Studies:  (Chumash) life goes on as we continue our study of local Native Americans.

Religion: This week we begin Chapter 8!

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
