Hello Third Grade Families,

Parent’s Day is Friday. I look forward to meeting everyone in the Church for mass before we head over to the classroom. We will be making a miraculous medal and decorating our new book boxes!

Math: We will complete Unit 5 (very large and very small numbers) this week with a test on Thursday. Please take time to review place values with your child. In this unit we went all the way from the millions down past the decimal to the hundredths place!

IXL Math Skills Homework:

AA.2 Convert Between Decimals and Fractions

AA.3 Word Names for Decimals

AA.5 Compare Decimals

Reading: This week we will revisit a strategy that was first introduced earlier in the year: Summarize Text: Main Events. This is a critical but challenging skill. Students are expected to first, identify the main event of a narrative (often of a chapter or excerpt); then, summarize that event without retelling the whole story. Students should be focused on the most important parts only as they summarize in their own words.

Word Work: This week’s words can be found in your child’s planner. Our spelling test is scheduled for this Thursday.

Vocabulary: We will begin Unit 8.

Grammar: Students will continue to learn all about verbs, this week focusing on the past and future tenses: Lessons 18 & 19. Go online to the Grammar Workshop website in order to access more practice and study opportunities.

Writer’s Workshop: We’ve now organized and written a draft of the first chapter of our informational texts! This week we will be studying mentor texts in search of elaboration strategies before writing on our second sub-topic.

Science: We continue to learn all about the solar system!

Social Studies: Now that we’ve launched our unit on local Native American culture, we will begin to dig in further as we study the Chumash people.

Religion: The class will complete Chapter 12: Jesus Revealed the Kingdom of God.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
