Hello Third Grade Families,

Happy Valentine’s Day! We will be exchanging cards Wednesday morning. Please remember to send in your covered box. Directions were sent last week via e-mail.

Math: Unit 6 continues with a study of polygons and angles. We will be taking a closer look at a variety of shapes with a special focus on quadrilaterals. The class will be classifying various figures into groups including: quadrangles, parallelograms and rectangles. This week, take some time to work with your child on identifying and comparing angles. Try and identify angles that are bigger and smaller than 90 degrees (right angles) as well.

IXL Homework:

CC4. Is it a polygon?

CC2. Count and compare sides and vertices.

DD3. Parallel sides in quadrilaterals.

Reading: New guided reading levels will be sent home in your child’s planner on Tuesday along with Progress Reports.

Homework: fluency + 100 minutes (minimum) read & logged.

Word Work: This week’s words can be found in your child’s planner. Our spelling test is scheduled for next Monday.

Writer’s Workshop: This week is dedicated to the Palmisano Writing Contest! The students will complete an on-demand writing assignment on a moment when they were helpful to their communities: home, school or otherwise.

Science: We continue to learn all about the solar system! This week’s focus will be on the phases of the moon. Students are currently taking turns recording observations of the moon for a week. By the end of the year, we will all have had a turn. These will be stored in a larger book where students will be able to see the cyclical nature of these phases. Likewise, students are also taking turns recording the daily sunrise and sunset. We will be taking turns recording these for a week as well. The idea is the same as the phases of the moon: for students to understand the patterns in the sky.

Religion: This week marks the beginning of Lent. We will celebrate Ash Wednesday with 8:30 mass in the morning. Of course, all are welcome to join should your schedule permit.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
