Dear Parents,                            May 20, 2012

We are wrapping up Theme 10 with week 3!   Our reading strategy this week is monitor/clarify. Part of becoming a good reader is realizing that if the story we are reading is unclear we must stop and clarify the story so that we understand. As you read with your student please practice this strategy. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is cause and effect. Remember the cause is why something happened and the effect is what happened. Our phonics focus this week is on adding –er and –est to base words. Examples include hot, hotter, hottest, cold, colder, and coldest. Our grammar focus is on comparing. As we continue to review the spelling words we have learned in first grade don’t forget to practice using Spellingcity.com!

In math, we will be wrapping up our chapter on geometry. We will have a day of review before our test on Wednesday. In social studies we will be working on an activity dealing with different languages in connection with our study of Our World Near and Far. We will begin our review of animals, their environments, needs, and structures as begin to prepare for our final field trip to the zoo. In religion we will focus on the Rosary. Please encourage your student to bring their rosary to school so we may pray the rosary each day during our religion lesson.
