Hello Third Grade Families,

Happy first week of Spring! This is a short week. As a reminder, Thursday is a half day followed by Easter vacation. I hope everyone enjoys the break, resting among family and friends.

Math: This week marks the beginning of Unit 8: Fractions. Since we have no math homework, please use this time to review fractional parts of a group with your child. Third graders should be able to solve problems like, for example: two-thirds of 16; or, three-fifths of 30. This is where all that division practice will begin to come into play.

Reading: Rather than introduce a new strategy, this week we will review several key skills taught over the last two trimesters: Determine the Author’s Purpose, Cross Checking, Use Punctuation for Phrasing & Prosody, Use Dictionaries/Thesauruses/Glossaries.

There will be no fluency or required reading homework. Instead, practice the above skills as you read at your leisure.

Word Work: The class will focus on two review sorts: Within Word Patterns #17 & Letter Name – Alphabetic #50. We will also introduce some new word work activities!

Writer’s Workshop: Upon our return from the break, we will dive in to persuasive writing.

Grammar: The class will continue Unit 4: Adjectives and Adverbs with lessons 28, 29 and 30.

Science: This week is all about comparing and contrasting extinct and modern animals.

Social Studies: We will continue our unit on Government and Citizenship.

Religion: The class will focus on Holy Week activities culminating in the living Stations of the Cross on Wednesday afternoon.

Best,

Ms. Espinosa
