Dear Parents,              November 4, 2013

The students did a fantastic job in the Saints Parade! To all those who attended, thank you for your support!

We will be finishing up theme 3 in our reading series this week.  Our reading strategy is “questioning”.  Before reading a story, we look at the cover, the title and the pictures and make a prediction about what the story will be about.  While making our predictions, we ask ourselves questions.  The comprehension skill that will help us with this reading strategy is categorizing.  Grouping things together will help us answer our questions and help us understand the story.  Our phonics focus this week is words with ‘r’ clusters and contractions with ‘s.  Our grammar focus this week will concentrate on the action part of sentences.  This week, our spelling words are from unit 13 – clusters with r.

We will be spending time reviewing all of the concepts we have learned thus far in our math units 1-3 from adding and subtracting on the number line to practicing the frame and arrow routine.

In religion, we will begin a new chapter on how to pray the Our Father.

In science we will begin Chapter 3: Living Things Meet Their Needs. We will have a chance to be explorers on our school campus on Tuesday as we search for living and nonliving things!

In social studies we will discuss families and tools from long ago. These lessons will prepare us for our work on our Readers Theatre Thanksgiving Play, which we will perform in late November. (Details will be sent home at a later date!)

As a reminder, please practice sight words daily with your students. As we approach the end of our first trimester we will be reviewing all words we have learned thus far! Please work with your student on recognizing the word by SIGHT as these words do not follow the regular rules of segmenting.

Reminders:

  • Please remind your child to bring their library book to school on Tuesday so that they may check out a new one.
  • Friday is a half-day!
  • It is All About….Eva! Congratulations!

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.  Have a wonderful week!

~Ms. Manning
