Hello Second Grade Families,

Student work folders will go home on Tuesday. Please take some time to review your child’s work with him/her, praising accomplishments and analyzing mistakes for further growth.

Wednesday is our first free dress day of the year. Participating students should bring $1 (or more) to be donated to the LA Archdiocese Adopt-a-Family program.

Math: This week we find ourselves beginning Unit 2: Addition and Subtraction Facts. The students will begin with a quick review of “number stories” (word problems) before diving into doubles facts (1+1, 2+2, 3+3…up to 10+10). As you work with your child, I would highly recommend practicing doubles facts as the ultimate goal is automaticity: for students to have these committed to memory. Among other things, doubles facts are the building blocks for multiplication next year.

For IXL math homework this week, please complete the following skills:

E.10

E.11

E.12

Reading: On Tuesday, students will take home their first fluency homework assignment. Much like our spelling words, these passages are differentiated so that students are each working at their own just-right level. However although the passages vary from student to student, the directions and goals are the same for all ~ to build speed and accuracy in reading by decoding more smoothly, in bigger scoops and without additions, omissions or miscues. In addition, students will take home a sheet with directions. Although we have gone over this in class, practicing and modeling both the parent and student’s role, feel free to refer to this for guidance. Like the reading log, this should be completed across and week and will be due on Tuesday.

Word Work: In class, students are currently being assessed on Fry’s six lists of 100 sight words. More on this to come, so stay tuned…

Students also received this week’s spelling words on Monday. Keep in mind that families can use Spellingcity.com to access them from home as well. Right now, gor the sort #: just take last week’s and move up one. You can also look in your child’s planner for a label with this week’s color/number. Our next test will be Friday.

Writing: In writing, the students will continue to close read the mentor text Owl Moon in order to try out craft moves from favorite authors.

Science: This week we will make our first trip to the science lab for our unit on plant life cycles. We will be planting and observing lima beans grow, learning about the parts of a plant as well as measuring their growth.

Religion: We will move forward with our family life unit, now focusing on “God’s Gift of Love”. The students will briefly learn about the sacraments as signs of love between God and us before discussing promises as they relate to the sacraments.

Have a great week!

Best,

Ms. Espinosa
