Dear Third Grade Families,

This week we will continue with testing, turning our attention to the CogAT. As always, please make sure that your child is well rested and at school on time every morning, as we will begin testing promptly at 8:00 and continue up until recess. In third grade, students take the CogAT to assess their abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (spatial) symbols. Due to this testing, our classroom academic load will be noticeably lighter this week.

This Wednesday we will also have our first quiz for math chapter 3 (addition and subtraction). The quiz will cover adding and estimating sums and, as with all math quizzes, will be available for correction and return for full credit after it is scored.

In Language Arts, we will begin publishing our first non-fiction/functional writing assignment: directions! Students who have made revisions after conferencing with me will move on to this exciting next and final step. We will also begin a review of nouns in preparation for our study of adjectives. Finally, we will begin reading our new book, 26 Fairmount!

This Thursday we will visit the SHS library again. Please remind your child to bring his/her library books to school this day so that two new books may be checked out. In addition, please take a moment to remind your child of appropriate behavior in a library setting. As I often remind the students, the library is a very special place where we are to find and enjoy books before socializing.

Friday is a full day with school wide Families in the afternoon.

Have a great week!

Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
