Dear Second Grade Families,

Thank you to all the parents who came to help out in our Primary Centers on Friday.  We are excited about going on our first second grade field trip!  Our first grade friends will be joining us on this field trip.  We look forward to some apple picking.

We are entering our second and last week of ITBS testing. I have spread out the testing so as not to be so overwhelming. The second graders are doing their best in all the areas.   We are looking forward to our last day of testing on Friday.

HERE’S A QUICK LOOK AT OUR WEEK (INCLUDING ITBS TESTING)

Homework:  Reading Log, Fluency, IXL (A.3 & E.6)  and practice spelling words.

IXL  homework is only 15 minutes a week.  Your child may complete more than 15 minutes a week.  My time requirement for homework is no more than 30 minutes a day.  Therefore, I require 20 minutes of reading, about 2  minutes of fluency and a few minutes of math and spelling review.  If you have any questions in regards to homework please come by my classroom before or after school or send me an email.

Part of your child’s homework is to have their planner signed daily.  The planner is important to sign daily because it is one way we can communicate with each other.

Flat Stanley:  Information about Flat Stanley will be in your child’s Wednesday Folder.  Please continue to look for a family that will be committed to be your child’s pen pal until the end of January.  They must be able to correspond at least once a month.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK will begin in October.  Names are picked at random, lottery style.  The second grader will bring a letter and a poster home on Friday to be completed and returned on the following Monday. The second grader is to do the writing and decorating, but you can help with ideas and spelling.

ITBS TESTING:  We will not be testing on Monday because of our field trip.  Please help your child do their very best on the ITBS testing by having them get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast and pack a snack for recess.  Sometimes we continue testing after recess and I would like them reenergized for the test.

RELIGION:  We will review Unit 1 in class this week  and take a quiz on Thursday.

SAINTS are people who heard God speaking to them. Look for your child’s saint assignment next week. This will be the same saint for our famous SAINTS’ PARADE  on Friday,  November 1st.

ELA: We will continue reading Julius and indentifying realism and fantasy. We will be predicting/inferring outcomes, reading for fluency and comprehension; long and short vowel review in phonics; multi-meaning words/homophones/synonyms/antonyms.

Spelling:  Unit 4, long o and u with silent e. Spelling City,   Click on “Spelling City” to have your child practice their spelling words before our spelling test on Thursday.

Writing: Capitalization, punctuation, identifying complete sentences and creative writing.

MATH:  We continue working on identifying operations in word problems.  We have learned how to skip count on a calculator.  We will continue practicing skip counting with three digit numbers.  We will finish up unit 1 in math this week.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  Learning about our community.

SCIENCE:  We continue learning about the plant life cycle.  We will observe our lima beans we planted last week.

If you have further questions, please send me an email secondgrade@sacredheartschoolventura.org.

Blessings,

Mrs. Vazquez
