Third grade families,

I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend with family and loved ones! We continue spending our days working hard in third grade.

As a reminder, SHS is collecting beanie babies for Dr. White’s Mission project.  If you would like to donate a beanie baby for the children in Dr. White’s mission trip to West Africa, please bring them to school by Friday, 10/12!

A few important dates:

  • Wednesday, 10/10 is picture re-takes.
  • Thursday, 10/11 is library day.
  • Friday, 10/11 is a full-day Friday.

  • IXL Math: C.3, U.8 & P.3
  • Fluency & comprehension questions
  • 100 minutes of reading/week

Sneak peek to our week:

Math: We continue on with Unit 2.  In this unit, we will continue practicing with word problems (number stories) using multi-digits. We continue practicing different strategies and diagrams to help us solve two and three digit number stories.

Reading: In reading, we begin our third bend, discussing GRIT and how having GRIT helps us become the best readers we can be.  GRIT is having the perseverance and determination to get through something difficult.  In this case, reading challenging books, or books out of our comfort zone!  In the back of your child’s homework folder, you should find a GRIT reading test.  In class, we talked about the different ways we can show GRIT when reading. The students highlighted things that they felt they did well. It can be beneficial to pick one of the GRIT strategies to focus on when reading every night.

Spelling: spelling words can be found in your child’s planner. Spelling tests will be this Friday.

Writing: In writing, we continue drafting away at our narrative stories. Our stories became long and full of great detail.  We are taking our time in using all the strategies we have learned to polish our work.  We are wrapping up drafts on Wednesday, and will begin the third bend of writing later this week!

Social Studies: We have begun our Social Studies unit.  This week we discussed locations.  We identified California’s location as part of a continent, country, and state.

Religion: We wrapped up our study of the seven Sacraments! Now, we begin categorizing our Sacraments into three categories; Sacraments of Initiation, Sacraments of Healing, and Sacraments of Service.

Grammar: This week we wrap up our chapter on book titles.  We are going to shift our learning this week, and review a bit on punctuation, practicing where we would insert periods, commas, and paragraph indentations in our writing.

Have a wonderful week,

Miss Poindexter
