Third grade families,

We have reached the end of October! The school year is flying by, but we continue to work hard and create many great moments during our time together.

Important dates:

  • Wednesday, 10/31 is a free, free dress day. Halloween attire is allowed, but no costumes, please.
  • Thursday, 11/01 is a Holy Day of Obligation. We will be attending mass that morning. This day is also a library day!
  • Friday, 11/02 is our Saint’s Parade and half-day Friday!
  • Saturday, 11/03 is the Palmisano Basketball Clinic from 9:30-11:30 AM. If interested, there are flyers in the office and sign-ups are available at the door of the St. Bonaventure gym!

Homework this week:

  • Fluency
  • Reading & reading logs
  • IXL math: C. 9, C. 14, D.7

Sneak peek to our academic week:

Math: We have wrapped up unit 2 and will take our test on Tuesday.  Unit 3 consists of mainly measurement. We will begin measuring line segments, calculating area and perimeter, circumference, etc. We will begin Unit 3 on Monday, and will spend the remaining of this week solving open-ended math problems in collaborative groups, and continue working through our tricky problem of the week!

Reading: We have completed our unit 1 in Reader’s Workshop.  This week we begin unit 2.  Unit 2 focuses primarily on non-fiction books.  This week we will learn how to work our way through non-fiction books, figuring out exactly what the author wants to teach us. We then will learn the different ways we can organize the factual information in our books!

Writing: We are reaching the end of unit 1 in Writer’s Workshop! In our narrative writing, we continue to revise our writing by expanding on ideas, double checking our punctuation, and revising the endings of our narrative stories.

Spelling: Words can be found in your child’s planner. Our spelling tests will be pushed to Monday.

Religion: This week in religion we will begin chapter 3, discussing the ways that God calls us to be Holy People. We will be attending mass twice this week.  Once on Thursday, as a Holy Day of Obligation, and again on Friday!

Grammar: In grammar we will work on abbreviations, and learning about the ways we abbreviate months of the year, days of the week, titles of respect, and initials.

Science/Social Studies: In science we begin chapter 2, discussing organisms and how they compete for natural resources, shelter, and food.  In social studies we begin chapter 1, lesson 3, reading about human-made features of a place, and identifying the ways that people have modified the physical environment.

Have a great week and Happy Halloween!
