Dear Parents,                      April 15, 2013

It was wonderful to see some of you on Friday, for our IN-N-OUT day! I hope your hamburger was as delicious as mine! Yum!

We are starting theme 9 in our reading series – Special Friends.  Our reading strategy this week is “monitor/clarify”.  The comprehension skill that will help us with this strategy is noting details.  Using the text, pictures, and paying attention to the “extras” in a story will help us better understand what we read.  Our phonics focus this week, is sounds for y.  Y is usually a consonant, however, it sometimes acts as a vowel.  When y comes at the end of a short word, the y sounds like a long /i/ (try), while y at the end of a long word sounds like a long /e/ (funny).  Our grammar focus this week, is the proper usage of the words, is and are.  Our spelling words this week, are from unit 29 and all have a y that sounds like a long /i/.  The words are posted to spellingcity.com.  Don’t forget to play the games and take practice tests!

We will be moving right along in our chapter on geometry! We will begin our week with a focus on solid shapes and then move into fractions (the easy ones!)

In religion we will be spending our time focusing on Jesus sending the Holy Spirit. We will be working from our Religion book, Chapter 21.

In science we continue with a wrap up of clouds and in social studies we continue our study of Our Heroes, Our Country.

This Monday will begin the Speech Contest within our classroom. From all students, 5 will be selected to go on to the finals.

As I work to finish my graduate program at LMU, I will be working to complete a requirement for the state of California credential. This requires me to spend some time in a public school setting. Mr. Doswell and Mrs. Wipper will be the ones to help out while I am fulfilling this requirement. This Friday, Mrs. Wipper will be the substitute all day.

In addition, as part of my credential process, there is a requirement of filming me teaching your children. This will require a permission slip; please look for this in the red folder within the week.

Announcements for the week:

  • Please remind your student to bring their library book on Tuesday so that they may check out another one.
  • Wednesday is $1 Free Dress Day!
  • Thursday there is an assembly at 11am.
  • Friday is a noon dismissal and Primary Centers!
  • This week is All About…. Vadim! Congratulations!
