This week in first grade, we are learning…
Language Arts: Our reading strategy this week is summarizing and the comprehension skill that will help us with that strategy is making generalizations. Paying attention to the beginning, middle, and end of the story will help us with summarizing and paying attention to the details can help us in making generalizations. Our phonics focus this week is on the long sound of /a/ in the CVCe pattern – consonant, vowel, consonant, final (silent) e. (Words such as cake, made, late). We are also working on the soft sound of /c/ (as in face) and /g/ (as in cage). We will be taking a look at word endings: ng, nk, and nd and we will also review the consonant digraphs, th, wh, sh, ch, and tch. Our grammar focus this week is on determining whether a sentence is a telling, asking, or exclamatory sentence.
As a reminder, at this point in the year, I am requesting that the students begin to record their own reading on the reading log. I would like for them to write all that is needed, excluding your signature of course! This will help us greatly with our writing skills.
Spelling: Our spelling words are from unit 20 and follow the CVCe pattern for the long sound of /a/.
Math: We will be continuing on with our math unit 5. We will be focusing on comparing weights and more than and less than number stories.
Religion: We will be reading from our textbook this week and learning how Jesus calls his Apostles.
Science: In science we will be wrapping up our chapter on living and nonliving things. This week we will be taking our test on Tuesday.
Social Studies: In social studies we will be continuing our chapter on life in a community by discussing how communities change and trading good and services.

- Tuesday: IXL.com Skill G.2 and Spelling p. 149-150
- Wednesday: Math Worksheet and 7 Sentences
- Thursday: Math Worksheet and Spelling p. 152
- Friday: Read two times!
Reminders for the Week:
- PE Uniforms on Tuesday and Thursday!
- Please remind your child to bring their library book on Tuesday so that they may check out a new one.
- Friday is primary centers and a noon dismissal.
