Dear Parents,                          September 19, 2016

This week in First Grade we are learning….

Language Arts: In Readers Workshop we will be looking at all parts of a word when we read, use meaning to help us figure out words, double check our reading and continue to build our stamina by not giving up when we find tricky words. In Writers Workshop we are continuing to read our writing as we read books, will begin working with a writing partner, and attempt to bring our stories to life through our characters. In addition, we will also be focusing on specific phonetic skills. This week, we will be highlighting the sounds associated with the letters b (bear), r (rooster), h (horse), g (goose) and i (igloo). Our spelling words will be practicing these sounds and will come from Unit 5 in our books.

Math: We will learn about analog clocks, begin practice on telling time to the nearest hour, explore some of our math tools, and examine pennies.

Science: We are wrapping up our first chapter! We will be reviewing all that we have learned about plants by taking a nature walk and examining our experiment from last week (Can seeds grow without soil?). We will be taking our first science test in the middle of the week!

Social Studies: We continue work from Unit 1: “School Days”. This week we are learning about schools from long ago and how we can help one another.

Religion: This week we are working from our textbook. We will be focusing on Chapter 4: God Our Father is Holy. We will also be taking a walking field trip over to the church to take a closer look at the altar and the stained glass windows.

Art: We will be finishing up our water lilies art project from last week inspired by the artist Claude Monet.
