Hello Third Grade Families,

Happy Spring! This is a short week. As a reminder, Thursday is a half day followed by Easter vacation. I hope everyone enjoys the break, resting among family and friends.

Math: This week will be dedicated to extended math facts, both in multiplication and division. We will multiply one digit numbers by multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000 (9 x 7,000) and divide such multiplies by 1 digit numbers (6,300/9). Later in the week, we will spend some time reviewing rounding numbers to the nearest to and hundred in a lesson on estimating costs.

There is no math homework this week. However, if you are looking to get some study time in I would highly recommend working on learning those multiplication and division facts. Committing these to memory is a great investment in future chapters when we make it to multi-digit multiplication and division. Tip: Don’t bother practicing the 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s facts as students can skip count with ease. Instead, focus on the 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s both in multiplication and division.

Reading: We have started a new read-aloud as a companion piece to our Character Study unit. This week is all about catching up on Because of Winn-Dixie so that we can use this mentor text on specific lessons when we return from the break.

There will be no fluency or required reading homework. Instead, enjoy a good book at your leisure.

Word Work: The class will not have new words this week. Instead, we will learn some new ways to sort our words: skills that apply to all groups, all weeks.

Writer’s Workshop: Upon our return from the break, we will dive in to persuasive writing. Until then, consider an area where you would like to see a change in your community ~ class, school, home, neighborhood, city: your choice. Our unit will build on this, as students will learn to use their voices in becoming agents of change.

Social Studies: We will continue our unit on the Chumash, now turning our attention to canoe making and the importance of fishing for these coastal communities.

Religion: The class will focus on Holy Week activities culminating in the living Stations of the Cross on Wednesday afternoon.

Best,

Ms. Espinosa
